Working From Home? 10 Ways to Stay On Top

Small Office Home Offices (SOHO) are increasingly on the rise - and with research predicting with increasing frequency that this is the trend of the future, chances are that you'll be reading this in your own home office!

A home-based business has a lot of advantages over the traditional 9-5 office system, and no wonder this trend is hotter than ever before!

However, working at home does mean that you might lose the structure and schedule of an office environment. So here's a few tips to help you plan your day -the right way!

Kickstart Your Day

How you start off will show how you end up! Begin your day with a positive frame of mind, go jogging to take the kinks out of your mind, have a healthy breakfast and get started on your work day.

Develop A Schedule

Working at home brings with it a lot of flexibility and freedom. However, you need to be careful that you don't misuse it. You are your own boss, so act like you ARE the boss! Work out strict time schedules -and stick to it. Plan out all the all the tasks you would like to get accomplished in your day, and make sure that you achieve your target.

Love Your Work

Make sure that the work you do is something you really enjoy doing. To be successful in business, you need to be really passionate about your work. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that because you have a background and the experience in a particular field, you should excel in it. Learn to recognize what motivates you, what excites you - and build your business based on that passion. One sure sign of knowing that you really love your work is to get that tingly feeling when you wake up every morning. Of course, you're going to have your good days and your bad days at the office - but a strong enthusiasm for your work ensures that you'll end up having more good days than bad days at the office!

Have a Great Home Office

Working out from your bedroom is really not the brightest idea. The best plan would be to have a separate area in the house for your work. If that is not possible, go for some neutral area in your apartment. Furnish it in a way that you feel is conducive to your work - and not to your relaxation! If you are an outdoors person, then maybe facing the windows while working will give you an outdoors feel. The sense of open space and outdoors will help you focus and provide you with a great atmosphere for work.

On the other hand, if you are more focused when you work indoors, then plan your workplace accordingly. The bottom-line: productive and functional are the key words here.

Support Systems: Your Life-Line

Separate your home-office from your home. One of the dangers of working from home is that you tend to isolate yourself. However, you need to realize that there is a life beyond work too. Driven entrepreneurs sometimes make the common mistake of assuming that all their waking hours should be spent working. However, slow down - a 16-hour, 7-days-a-week work schedule might actually reflect in diminished earnings and lower productivity. Surround yourself with a close-knit support system of family and friends. Share both the good times and the tough times with your loved ones, and watch both your quality of life and your bank account increase!

Set Daily Goals

Chalk out a schedule of what you want to accomplish on a day-to-day basis. Be realistic as to how much you can accomplish in a day. You sometimes get the feeling it would be great if you could clone 10 versions of yourself to get through your entire amount of work. But setting daily - and workable - goals mean that you achieve the big picture, while you keep working at the small picture.

Meet Your Deadlines

Setting daily goals and achieving your deadlines is the mark of professionalism. Meeting your deadlines shows that you respect your client, respect his business and respect your business.

Handy Snacks

A useful tip: You might feel like munching while you work, and that's one of the joys of not working in a stuffy corporate environment, right? However, be sure to keep your snacks at hand. A journey through the house in search of food might lead to a detour or two to check up on what the kids are doing. So, be forearmed - with munchies - and be forewarned!

Family Time Out

This one might seem a bit difficult initially - but keep your work time separate from your family time. Of course, one of the prime reasons of you opening your home-based business was probably to spend time with family. However, your business is serious business, and needs some serious time too!

Line Up Interesting Work For Next Day

Planning ahead is important, and when you plan up an interesting work rota for the next day, you motivate yourself to do better each and every time, and each and every day.
